The policy has yielded significant results, and cross-border travel has become commonplace.

Since its official implementation on December 20th, 2022, the "Macau vehicles traveling north" policy has effectively promoted transportation between Macau and the mainland. Statistics show that as of mid-September 2025, the Gongbei Customs had completed over 50,000 "Macau vehicles traveling north" registrations, with a peak monthly application volume of 3,709, reflecting the policy's popularity among residents of both places, and that cross-border self-driving travel has become a lifestyle for many.

Continuously Optimizing Processes and Enhancing the Clearance Experience

Over the past three years, the Guangdong and Macao governments have collaborated closely, optimizing and upgrading the application and passage process for "Macao Vehicles Traveling North" multiple times:

More Timely Information Notifications: Through the push notification function of the "Macao Vehicles Traveling North" mobile application, users are sent real-time updates on application progress and passage reminders, allowing vehicle owners to stay informed.

More Convenient Vehicle Inspections: Since December 1st, vehicles that have already passed inspection in Macao can be exempted from repeated safety performance inspections with a valid inspection report within one year; only a "uniqueness" inspection is required. Eligible applicants applying again can also be exempted from the "uniqueness" inspection, further simplifying procedures.

More Flexible Appointment Quotas: From December 11th, the daily appointment deadline has been extended from 10 PM to 10:30 PM. During the extended period, vehicle owners can reserve slots released due to cancellations on the same day, improving appointment success rates and scheduling flexibility.

Looking ahead: Accelerating Greater Bay Area Integration

The continuation and optimization of the "Macau vehicles traveling north" policy not only facilitates Macau residents' self-driving trips into Guangdong but also promotes economic, trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between the two regions. With continuously simplified customs procedures and improved services, this policy will become a crucial support for the construction of the "one-hour living circle" in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, injecting new momentum into regional coordinated development.

In the future, Guangdong and Macau will continue to improve the mechanism and arrangements, further promoting innovation in cross-border traffic management under the premise of safety and convenience, creating a smoother and more efficient travel environment for residents of the Greater Bay Area.
